Artist Statement
Third culture. A phrase that defines a group or community of people that find it hard to identify themselves through national, cultural or geographic means. Without generalising too much, one can assume that identity is thereby found through attachments to cognitive, creative or physical attributes of the individual. And so it is that, having no concrete national or geographical ties with a specific culture, I too found passion and relief in identifying with a greater global community of visual artists. Connecting with like-minded groups and individuals is and was always an important motivation when searching for meaning in the various places I have passed through.
Personal conviction and a selfish gratification, therefore, become central in my creative process. Turning inward and finding consistency within my surroundings has become a running theme in my works: Discovering my personal capability to detach from context and figurative conventions and capturing accidental emotional movement through intensity (and intension) of line and colour saturation.
Thus, my artistic identity pulses throughout the creative process, capturing moments of my own unintentional distractions, in which vulnerability is present. I try to bring to life emotions that exist in the monumental relationship between the artist and the medium.
Method
I work directly on unground canvas. On flat surfaces. This allows me to fully engage myself with the medium and its structures. To dance around the piece while working, struggling and conversing with the colours and contrasts of the different materials. Often, materials that I find in arms reach will become my tools, such as small wood blocks, pieces of paper, unravelled wired, brushed, rollers, anything that can carry colour and fulfil the desired actions.
